Aphotic Segment 010 | February 23rd 2011

What a spectacular showing at last week's Aphotic Segment. There were lots of heavy boozes, including myself, that kept it vibin' until the bartender Andrew was forced to banish us all from the premises - a true sign that I'm at least following through on some of the goals that I set out to achieve through this monthly event.

Continuing, Dan Kinney provided an unusual but certainly enjoyable selection of funk, techno and classic rock. Very nontraditional from an Aphotic standpoint, but nonetheless, the kind of character-driven music selection that I've come to embrace. There aren't too many dj's in this city that will play Bob Seger and Isolee in the same dj set. Maybe Psycho or Jared Wilson, but that's about end of the line. Moreover, Detroit can expect to see alot of Dan Kinney as his newly realized hobby as a dj becomes more prevalent in and around the environs of Detroit. Bright future for this guy!

Aphotic Segment 010 - The Walrus Edition

If one were to surmise the comparable attributes between a walrus and Detroit’s very own Daniel Kinney, then your description may read as followed: both are extremely sociable creatures, prone to loud bellowing, sometimes snorting……. and both have enough fortitude to adapt to the extreme conditions of their environment. Environment, you say? Well sure, why not. One’s from the Polar Arctic, while the other resides in Detroit. Might as well be the same, if you ask me. At any rate, one could even further surmise that a moniker like “The Walrus” is a fairly applicable name for such a strikingly similiar gentleman.

Call it tenacity, persistence, even thick-skinned. Ah…. what the hell! Why not even call it the blubber effect. Point being, that while Mr. Kinney hasn’t quite grazed the vast domain of Detroit’s fertile disc-jockey ocean, his walrus-like instincts positions him in a unique advantage above most newbies who are testing the waters for their very first time. And similar to the infinite ocean, Mr. Kinney’s musical selections are equally as boundless; blues, rock, soul, funk, electro, indie, and shaman-beats….. among many other titillating aural delights.

Join us on Wednesday, February 23rd as Aphotic Segment proudly presents the first ever public dj performance from Dan Kinney, a.k.a. “The Walrus”. The beats will certainly be heavy, so make sure you have what it takes to survive these elements!

It's been of towering priority to invite fellow music aficionado Kevin Sears, since the round tables session that conceived the very idea behind Aphotic Segment. Of the few years that I've had the pleasure of getting to know Kevin and his music collection, I've always found the smaller, intimate settings to be ideal. He lurks in the shadows of vast genre and treads heavily into each respective category's murky backwaters. It's weird, it's experimental, and most often, it's something I have yet to hear. Yes, this one's certified approved (download part 2); a little electro-y, alot of funky.... and just a little bit of James Blake For good measure.

Aphotic Segment 009 w/ Kevin Sears

While very few have survived such risky adventures, many others have succumbed to the lethal exploration of deep sea dwelling. Those of global submariner success stories include Jaques Cousteau, Steve Zissou, and of course our favorite ROV, Jason. What many in the marine biology and sea sciences have blatantly ignored were the fierce, and dare I say revolutionary achievements of underwater craftsman, Kevin Sears.

Accolades aside.... not only has this sea-lab technician handled a 12th round hammer-fest from a gang of blood lusting great whites, he has carefully perfected the long distance spear of their precious little preys , without ever blinking. Yeah, eat your heart out Chuck Noland!

But even beyond his dolphin-like instincts, and stingray reflects, Mr. Sears has an even more unimaginable record collection, 20,000 leagues deeper than the abyss. As one of our greatest musical pleasures yet to grace the spotlight, Aphotic Segment is overwhelmed with the joy that comes with presenting such a rare performance - the Best of Kevin Sears. Believe, his record collection runs as deep as the ocean – it’s vast, eclectic, it swells…… and it’s real briny. Better check it!

Aphotic Segment 008 | December 31st 2010

Aphotic Segment changed the tonal direction for our New Year's party to reflect a dancefloor vibe,and who better to set the mood than longtime dj and vehement record collector, Trent Abbe. Raised in the fertile ground of the late 90's Lansing electronic music scene, Trent has been educated on the lessons of dialing in the crowd and doing damn near better than ninety five percent of most disc jockeys. His records reflect the nostalgia of techno and house, along with a pinch of classic disco and funk. Holding court previous to Trent, I keep a steady flow of dance rock, post-punk, and afro-funk, among others, so that I could sustain a level of intensity that was inevitable when Trent assumed the 1's and 2's.

The highly anticipated and long overdue recordings from our Thanksgiving edition of Aphotic Segment are now available for download.

The Thanksgiving Aphotic Special featured fellow blood brother and musical prognosticator, Pipé Scuttleworth. As per usual, Pipé brought a well rounded influence of rock, experimental, Uk techno, drone, and punk.
