Aphotic Segment has enjoyed one year as a musical educator for the liberal listening crowd, pairing a fine musical backdrop with the necessary pastiche to spark collective inspirations courtesy of the event’s special guest selectors. As we make a solid transition into this year of the golden rabbit with wisdom and prescience, we intend to uphold the divinity of this everlasting humanistic code. Far be it for us to suggest we are the architects and pavers of this road however, for there have been many, especially in Detroit, who have navigated this familial rugged terrain. Long story short, good music is great, and our mission is to continue bringing you the goods. This month’s music engineer is proof positive.

Christian Jay Sienkiewicz, better known around the sub-tropical, Antarctic, eighth dimensional enclaves as Coyote Clean Up; is the guest of honor for this month’s Aphotic Segment. The musical triangulation of this clairvoyant is definitely left and right of center. There is simply no telling what international waters this self-proclaimed marauder intends to traverse. You must simply wash your hands of the situation, sit back and enjoy the ride.

Analogies aside, Christian’s influences are hard to pin. But whatever he plays, he’s sure to arouse your specific interests. His Downhill Express album from last year illuminates his fascination with down-tempo, house, and hip-hop….. while also providing a lyrical vibe that emanates with a shoegaze sensibility. Or perhaps you heard one of the many eclectic mixes compiled under his “Ice Cold Chrissy” moniker? Funk, jazz, world, and experimental….. not to mention his remix support for Toro Y Moi and Balam Acab. Indeed, Christian’s artistic integrity is looking positive these days, so don’t sleep on your chance to catch a truly one of a kind set. Ya’erd!

Aphotic Segment - One Year | May 25th 2011

It’s hard to believe that one year has passed, but I would have never imagined that I would still be toiling about nearly thirteen events later. As I reflect back on a year’s worth of events, I could not have expressed enough gratitude to all of the deejays and regular patrons who have made Aphotic Segment an anticipated monthly hangout. And to that, I thank you all immensely for your love and support..... but enough about me and more about the music.

I was fortunate enough to be graced with the presence of Detroit’s premiere music guru and Interdimensional Transmissions label head, Brendan Gillen, also known as BMG of Ectomorph. Brendan had approached me a couple of months ago about coordinating an event that would showcase his collection of music that spanned a century, and as inclined as I am to a variety of music, I was immediately intrigued. Below are a couple of two hour sets that move anywhere from south American psychedelic and American lo-fi reggae and indie, via peaking lights, to blues, jazz, soul, punk, and electronic. Enjoy!

Aphotic Segment - One Year Anniversary w/ BMG of Ectomorph

Already been a year, you say…? what a hum-dinger! It’s often that Aphotic Segment uses the power of timeless words to express such events, but it’s not often amused by the bewitchery and drivel of timeless quotes. Surely, this is a personal perspective. However, when someone says that “time flies when you’re having fun,” I usually resign myself to an onslaught of gag-like reflexes induced by sheer unoriginality or I feel compelled to enlist them with a fist blitz to their throat for ruining the moment. Therefore, I will abstain this time around from the power of verse in order to win your favor and instead, deliver the message straight to your dome piece.

There’s not a more perfect theme for Aphotic Segment’s one year anniversary than one that advocates an open musical slate. “100 Years of Music from Planet Earth” says it all of course, and there’s not a more fitting representative for such a theme than Detroit’s Brendan M. Gillen, better known around the global subterranean hemisphere as “BMG” of Ectomorph. His propensity for a multitude of worldly conversations and the intensity for which he engages them, appear as regularly as the dawn on a Costa Rican beach; as the analogy goes: you’re often more enlightened as the direct result of either experience.

His conversation criteria may range anywhere from sociology and anthropology to Buddhism and erotica. But of the many subjects that strike a particularly captivating note, is Brendan’s limitless knowledge on the subject of music… and I’m not just talking about genres haus; I’m talking about the elemental, instinctive musical language of cultures, both ancient and modern, and their similar primal qualities, despite their occasional divergent existences. What is Harlem hot jazz and how does it sometimes resemble Western swing? Or how can one conjure even the most obscure parallels between Miami Bass and Peruvian ritual music? Perhaps music shares a similar human predisposition, highlighted by the even more profound connection in the hidden meanings of their historic narratives.

Begin your Movement Festival pre-game on this ceremonial evening as BMG massages your eardrums, bends your mind, and expands your consciousness as he chronicles “100 Years of Music from Planet Earth”.

Last week's release party turned out a great success. Music was perfectly curated, records were sold, and merriment as experienced by all of the beloved patrons. For the first time since the inception of Aphotic, I decided against recording my set, and instead. I'm providing you with two superb mixes, ala Clayton Jackson and Walter Wascz of Nospectacle. Walter brings the tribal, low-bass space dub.... and Clayton keeps the vibe with dub techno, while transitioning into some of the more illustrious techno gems of the early 2000's, via Raum, Ghostly, and Force.

Aphotic Segment 012 - The Siege Vinyl Release Party

For the past several months, Aphotic Segment has enticed the Detroit musical landscape with both an aural and an ideologically-themed event that has touched upon a multitude of subjects that range from witches, deep sea diving, mythological wonderments, and political satire…. just to name a few. Often, Aphotic Segment relies on the esotericism of our own psychological ether to distill these whimsical and diabolical mutterings, at the expense of a more responsible use of time…… probably. Henceforth, it comes with great content when a theme happens to appear purely by coincidence, rather than expending countless hours on crafting such an idea.

So what exactly is this coincidence, you ask? Well, some of you may have heard..... and if you haven’t caught wind of this news yet, then you are certainly hearing it for the very first time. Aphotic creative director, Drew Pompa, is finally releasing his very first vinyl record with brother, Pipé Scuttleworth. These dna brothers are referred to ‘round these parts as “The Siege” and they’re excited to introduce their inaugural music artifact by hosting a release party for this month’s Aphotic Segment.

Like the very mantra surrounding Aphotic events, The Siege’s debut E.P on Blank Artists entitled Randall Flurgenbach’s Strange Space Chalet, offers a musical perspective that can be thought of as subversive, incendiary, and crypto-political…. yet, hopeful and universal. Inspired by electronica, drone, fuzz, funk, old souls and the dismantling of tyrannical regimes; The Siege are setting the stage for a world take over, one record at a time; and they hope you will join them in this monumental engagement. The evening’s musical itinerary will include The Siege member, Drew Pompa. Following Drew’s lead will be Detroit experimentalist provocateurs Nospectacle for a rare dj performance, along with one of our favorite nocturnal miscreants, Clayton Jackson.

This month has taken me longer than usual to upload the recordings, due to the drastic number of logs that have made their way into my itinerary over the past couple of weeks. Not only is my brother and I playing the Detroit Electronic Music Festival and releasing a record, but I just found out that I might be receiving a healthy enough tax return to justify the purchase of a new computer...... BOOYAH!

Enough about me... let's wax about the evening's re-cap. I've been talking since the beginning of Aphotic about having my girl Amy play and last month's soiree was nothing short of what I had expected from the evenings series of events. In the words of Ms. Kaherl herself, Shenanigans! first me, down-tempo, then drink, mid-tempo, then drink. Second Amy, high-tempo, then drink, then Peak time, then drink, then Tone-loc, Salt N Pepa, and A Tribe Called Quest. So long story short, it was kinds of like the best ever sweet sixteen party, except boys were allowed and so was unsupervised debauchery. So good, that I might have to do this again next year. Aphotic Segment 011 - The Coming of Age Edition w/ Amy Dreamcatcher

Like many testaments in the universe, there’s no better moment in life than a true coming of age. Ah yes, success found through the trials and tribulations of growing. Perhaps Jamie survived puberty and little Danny came out of the closet….. or what if Destiny stopped workin’ the streets and Randall quit being a loafer, moved out of his parents house and finally got a fucking job? These are all mere examples of one’s coming of age.

Moreover, the coming of age story for one Midwestern girl started with the lifelong ambition of becoming a Detroit disc jockey. Like many musical ladies of the day, Amy Dreamcatcher’s beginnings started with Madonna and Cindy Lauper slumber parties and New Kids on the Block heartthrobs. Maybe a Jared Leto crush too. But now, her current offerings of new-wave, post-punk, Americana, and everything in between suggest this lady is no longer a little girl. And although she’s all grown up, she’ll never forget when she was touched for the very first time. Please join us as Amy Dreamcatcher headlines this month’s Aphotic Segment. Not only will this be an evening of shenanigans, it will be a true coming of age!
