Aphotic Segment is back again this month for a night of audio freak-waves and our warming announcement couldn’t have come at a better time than the day metro Detroit announced it’s all time record for snowfall. Despite this drunken weather and your battered spirits, we’re here to soothe the pain and encourage the soul to trudge ahead. Resident selector, Drew Pompa, will be holding it down all evening with a new stack of records.

Aphotic Segment is upon us again, creeping back into your audio channels for a night of unfiltered, genre-bending madness. Spirits are flying high over at the We Are All Machines camp, as last week’s Powell event has overcome our senses, inspired our directions, and energized our will to provide the city with a unique monthly music program. As such, we remain eager to present you with a great music alternative to your last Friday of the month.

This month’s guest is friend and firebrand, Soren Kenny. This will mark his second appearance at Aphotic Segment, and most likely, not his last. His sonic ticklers always emits a proper frequency through time and space but his vast selections of classic house, rare funk, minimal wave, and garage 7′s are what really makes his appearances so noteworthy; impeccable for the Aphotic Jello mold. Aphotic Segment - The Resurrection

Aphotic Segment is a monthly event, which seeks to explore the infinite possibilities in musical programming.  Too often sound is presented myopically, in a context that focuses on a particular scene or style.  Our mission is to break down these fashionable constructs and reassemble them in ways that encourage creative imagination in diverse musical programming.

After a nearly two-year hiatus, Aphotic Segment is proud to announce the re-launch of its monthly event. The musical program carries on in tradition of past events, but on a new monthly night (every last Friday of the month) and at a new home in the heart of Detroit’s Corktown neighborhood. Aphotic Segment @ The Sugar House

The Sugar House is one of Detroit’s newest watering holes.  They serve a bevy of flips, fizzes, classics and craft cocktails, where the crew of bartenders effortlessly blends spirits that are both boozy and packed with flavor, lots of flavor.  The décor is both subtly understated and stylish; a chandelier with its brass bothria illuminating the mullions dissecting the Michigan Avenue window panes is juxtaposed by the dimly-lit and unassuming tables pushed up against exposed brick walls, adorned with a variety of taxidermic Bovidae heads.  It all gives the impression that patrons have options that range from rare whiskeys and Italian Amaros to canned beer.

Even better, this fine establishment plays host to a local record collector’s leisurely party of listening pleasures every unsuspecting Sunday night.  Chad Pratt, of Ghostly International’s Midwest Product, plays musically diverse sets  that traverse throughout rare soul, funk, post-punk, new-wave and electronic.  Though the craft cocktail parades itself in stunning, Manhattan and New Orleanian glory at the bar, the music shambles with odd grace by your eardrum at an approachable and convivial gait. On a regular Sunday night at the Sugar House, music and intimate atmosphere balance in measured harmony, much like subtly paired aperitifs and ryes; a mélange of flavor and booziness.   Sounds like an Aphotic Segment!

Aphotic Segment Presents: A Mutha’ Fu#%ing Peridot Party

Jeez-o-petes! We’ve been hermetic like ole’ Rip, asleep in the prairies of Detroit, missing without a trace and beard’s a’growing. Alas, Aphotic Segment has awoken and although we’ve been remiss these last few months, we’ve also been eager to make it back on the interwebs to inform everyone that general revelry is still on the up and up…. And of course, to also make you privy to a little impromptu end of summer jam.

Now for the party theme: it’s been a minute, so the brain tunnels have been feeling kind of like a conduit for cobwebs, rather than a stream of creativity. On the other hand, it would be against tradition, not to mention an utter disappointment, if we didn’t give the end-of-summer soiree a theme. Thankfully enough, Detroit livin’ is chocked full of random encounters and regular hi-jinks from which to draw inspiration from, and so our current theme is courtesy of, and also dedicated to a couple of drunken Norwegians that I recently ran into at…… you betcha’, the Woodbridge Pub. The exchange goes a little sumpin’ sumpin’ like this:

Norwegian #1: Hey Man, have you ever seen a peridot?
Me: Naw’ man, never seen a peridot before. What’s that?
Norwegian #2: Aw dude, it’s a fuckin’ rock that glows man, it’s from the world. It’s green.

As fate would have it, I ran into a toothless soothsayer immediately following my exchange with the Norwegians, and this creeper-of-a-hobbit dude explains to me that peridots are the birth stone for the month of August. Since the exchanges with the Norwegians and soothsayer proved to be some of the most serendipitous encounters in my lifetime, I decided to reward them with a couple of flagons of ale. I further explained to this motley crew of weirdoes that our amazing encounter could also prove valuable in helping me brainstorm a name for the party. But as the night wore on, everyone joe-cockeyed and absinthe-drunk, our brainstorm proved futile. Not until a loud, cantankerous inebriate sitting at the bar yelled at piercing volume “Hell man, in that case, you should throw A Mutha’ Fu#%ing Peridot Party!” And so once again, fate prevails!

Aphotic Segment - USA Edition

With a plethora of subject matter for which to theme our event, it comes with tremendous surprise that Aphotic Segment has yet to sound off about this year’s highly contested presidential debate. Whether you’ve become highly engrossed with or downright exhausted by the 2012 campaign, now is the time to stop by the Woodbridge pub and voice your opinion... and there is no better time to blather about said campaign than Aphotic’s springtime soiree that shall be referred to as the “USA Edition,” short for United Skulls of America.

As we move closer to an autocracy under this radical right-wing agenda, we’ll witness the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. As we become more civilized as better neighbors, friends and participants in the community, the government will further strip our rights to vote and assemble peacefully. No jobs? There are always entry level jobs available at McDonalds. No education? Who cares, there’s always the streets. No healthcare?... well, everyone dies anyway. Welcome to the United Skulls of America.
