Aphotic Segment w/ Beau Wanzer

As one chapter of Aphotic Segment closes, another opens with page after page of new and exciting musical dialogue for ya'll to become engrossed with. This month's chapter is probably one of the most captivating to date, as we're extremely excited to announce our guest, Beau Wanzer.

Beau has quietly been making waves in the music scene over the last couple of years, working in and out of various music projects, as well as releasing solo work under his own name. He's collaborated alongside Melvin Oliphant, a.k.a. Traxx, as Mutant Beat Dance, releasing acid-house gems on the highly esteemed Rong Music and L.I.E.S. record labels. His project with White Car member, Elon Katz, under their 'Streetwalker' moniker, saw one of dance music's most highly-praised 12 inch releases from last year. In case you're wondering, it was the Future Fusion LP on Veronica Vasicka's Minimal Wave sub-label, Cititrax. But enough about all the musical accolades. Beau is about as humble and personable as they get. He loves what he does and is happy to share it with enthusiastic folks.

Aphotic Segment w/ Kevin St. Cyr

Aphotic Segment is back again this month, ignited and inspired by weekends of travel, ¬roaming the lands and scouring bins of records, holding onto hope that the one record you’ve been chasing your whole life will somehow magically speak to you. Although this search continues, the sheer romance of the find keeps the flames a burnin’. As such, we’re eager to program each month’s event with exciting new additions to our catalogs of music.

Although we are overcome by the hobby of collecting music, we do recognize the dark paths of compulsion that exist in this line of work. However, what really sets a person apart as a music enthusiast and deejay is one who can take a step back from this compulsion, learn their collection and present them in a way that that speaks of narrative, history and unique character.

Kevin St. Cyr is no exception to this rule. Our ears are always greeted to plethora of inviting sounds whenever we have the pleasure of hearing him play. Kevin’s style is informed and spirited, yet seemingly whimsical, often traversing paths of punk, techno, italo and funk. But that might be a unfair paraphrase, as Kevin has been known to wander in just about every direction. A little unnamed source, however, has spoken of a dance-punk program, but enough with the teasers. You’ll just have to come and find out what’s in store. Aphotic Segment w/ Mitchell Bros.

Aphotic Segment thanks the many gents and ladies who made it out to last month's funky rambunctious jams.  And despite the seasons, the fall seems to be unrelenting with all our searing nose burgers.  We also find ourselves riding on the dorsal of reality's ever-changing moment.  As such, it's important to us that we capture some of the most intriguing spirits along the way and help to perpetuate their sonic influence.  The Mitchell Bros. are precisely those spirits and they continue to serve as a conduit to music language in Detroit, to this day!

 

In the very early '00s there were few DJ duos in Detroit that looked backward as ferociously as the Mitchell Bros. They rejected the minimal techno movement of the day and played dance-punk, ghetto-tech, disco and electro records from the late '70s and early '80s. Not really brothers, they sometimes bickered in public during their sets like blood relatives, and (rumor has it) fought in private long after the party was over. 

A dozen years later, the Mitchell Bros - Mikel "Detroit Threads" Smith and Walter "Nospectacle" Wasacz - have settled down: no, we don't expect them to brawl at the decks, but, yes, we do expect them to bring some of the blistering tunes that inspired Smith's notoriously graphic XXX PPP (as in triple X Punk, Pabst and Porn) nights at Hamtramck's Belmont lounge. It's time to strip down to your dancing clothes - or more - and get physical again. Come down and find somebody to love Oct. 5, as the Mitchell Bros will be joining Aphotic Segment hosts Drew Pompa and Soren Kenny at Nancy Whiskey, 2644 Harrison St. in Detroit's North Corktown. Aphotic Segment w/ Aaron Siegel (Fit Sound / FXHE)

Aphotic Segment is hot off the heels of another successful month of music programming. It was quite astounding to see a multitude of friends from NYC and Chicago, as well as our bread and butter locals, pop in to enjoy a night sonic monsoons and fringe hits. Surely the night has proven to of an exceptional pairing at our current home, Nancy Whiskey. We shall maintain this momentum by continuing a program of creative musical minds.

This next month's guest is Aaron Siegel, who is the founder and operator of Fit Distribution, which specializes in vinyl distro. He began Fit back in 2008 as response to the lack of distribution dedicated to quality independent dance music labels in Detroit, as well as Chicago and New York. Through his experience at Fit, Aaron has risen as an expert in his field of study and is one of the most ardent supporters and proliferators of quality Detroit music. As such, we are excited to have Aaron join us for his first Aphotic Segment, while he explores the depths of his record collection.

Opening the night of music will be resident deejays, Soren and Drew Pompa. As always, this is a free event. We Look forward to seeing you!

Aphotic Segment w/ Karl Meier and WWB

Aphotic Segment is back again, heating up the air waves and jamming up your head space, in what is sure to be another monthly event for the memory books. We are extremely excited to introduce our August cast of artists, featuring performances by Chicago stalwart, Karl Meier and live experimental electronic duo What We’ll Be (WWB). Both of them will be making their long-awaited Detroit debuts.

Karl Meier is a steward of electronic and experimental music and to many of his peers (not to mention even the most passive of observers), a true historian of the culture. Dedicate just one hour of your time talking with Karl and he will enlighten you to the depths of your musical core. Karl has worked tirelessly in and outside of the Chicago music scenes for nearly two decades, working at many of Chicago’s most established alternative music outlets, including Gramaphone and Reckless Records. He also traveled across the waters, setting up home base for a short period in one of England’s industrial music hubs, Birmingham. These experiences have played a huge rule in both inspiring and informing his vast knowledge of all things music and this fabric is woven seamlessly throughout his dj sets.

2014 has been a busy thus far for Karl, earning a steady flow of gigs, including a spot on Veronica Vasicka’s Minimal Wave radio show and a new monthly at Analogue in Chicago’s Logan Square. This past winter also marked the release of his Talker project with partner Jonathon ‘Stave’ Krohn on renowned seminal UK techno imprint, Downwards. Karl in looking forward to his first appearance in Detroit, so mark your calendars.

Opening the night’s headlining guest bill is Chicago experimental electronic duo, What We’ll Be (WWB). Comprised of ‘The Siege’ member, Pipé Scuttleworth and partner, Jeremiah Klinger, the two come from somewhat disparate backgrounds but combine very similar perspectives in production; Pipé has been producing oddball electronic music for a number of years on both We Are All Machines and once blossoming but now defunt Blank Artists label, while Jer became heavily involved as a guitarist in the dreamy post-rock outfit, Gregor Samsa. The two craft complex, meticulously placed sounds that reverberate into every nook and cranny of a room until it engrosses every human sensation. It is purely emotive electronic composition. WWB will be releasing their debut EP on We Are All Machines, late this summer and are looking forward to performing a live preview of the album, along with other original compositions.

Opening up the night of musical festivities will be residents Soren and Drew Pompa. this is a free event, per usual. We hope to see you all out.

Aphotic Segment w/ BMG (Interdimensional Transmissions)

This month's guest is none other than Brendan M Gillen, also known as BMG. In keeping with the musical theme that is fully encompassing the range of deep cuts from all frays of the musical spectrum, it is no surprise to see Brendan appearing at Aphotic Segment. He is a steward of musical history and like very few people, he has the intuitive ability to draws connections between disparate music genres. Brendan founded legendary Detroit imprint, Interdimensional Transmissions and produces in several of the label's project, including famed outfit, Ectomorph, which was based on his reaction from listening to artists like DBX, Basic Channel, and Drexciya. Since the label's inception, he has brought together a prolific team of artists, musicians and producers, developing a brand of music that has become highly respected as being true to the roots of Detroit electronic music. 

This will be Brendan's second appearance at Aphotic Segment and we are thrilled to welcome him back. Resident deejays Soren and Drew Pompa will be opening the night of musical festivities. We look forward to seeing you all. Per usual, this is a free event.

Aphotic Segment w/ Todd Osborn (Spectral / Rewind)

Aphotic Segment is a monthly music event in Detroit, produced by the We Are All Machines label. Our mission is to showcase a range of musical tastes, allowing the presenter to veer into a multitude of sonic directions, without the confines of a traditional club atmosphere. Too often, sound is presented myopically in a context that focuses on a particular scene or style. The current structure often serves to narrow the participant’s exposure, frequently at the expense of a broader spectrum of what exists or what may be.

We will attempt to parse the infinite, connect the musical dots of the past and present, to bridge non-electronic with electronic, and to present music in a fashion that is suitable for the listener’s total immersion. Our time is too limited to suppress the curious nature of humanity and it’s soundtrack. We hope you will join us monthly, as we continue to navigate and grow upon this theme.

Aphotic Segment will now be showcased on a new date and at new location. The event will be held on the first Sundays of the month at Nancy Whiskey in Detroit’s Corktown neighborhood. Todd Osborn, our special guest for the first Aphotic Segment at Nancy Whiskey, is the type of mind that has inherently inspired our musical themes. He is a reticent participator in the deep chasm of musical history, past and present, and has a record collection to show for it. His eccentric productions, which range from booty and house, to jungle and metal, have undoubtedly been coded with a virtuosic quality that speaks volumes about his knowledge and personality. We’ve invited Todd this month, to play a special set of deep library dusty cuts, so expect to hear a boundless range of freak waves. Residents Drew Pompa and Soren, will be joining Todd behind the decks. This is a free event.
