Aphotic Segment w/ Jeff Risk

Last Aphotic Segment proved a bit of a doozy, as the heavens decided to reek havoc on planet earth, here in Detroit. Despite the onslaught of snow, many familiar and lovely faces made the arduous journey to Nancy Whiskey to celebrate with us, a night of cerebral jams. Ya'll are brave and we truly appreciated your support. But as the time clock ticks, we look forward with increasing anticipation, as each and every new guest provides us with even greater excitement.

For this installment of Aphotic Segment, we're proud to announce that Jeff Risk will be joining us for a night of deep cuts from all avenues of the musical spectrum. Jeff has been a musical mind that we've admired since becoming acquainted more than five years ago. He owns a library of records from which he conveys his unique take on musical history. He draws from many influences, weaving together styles that include punk, dub, Jamaican soul, and jungle, but making sense of their place by creating his own connections. You may have heard him play over the summer at the widely successful Coconut Babylon events where dub, reggae, soul, and funk were the major themes. Expect Jeff to go even more eccentric and darker for his appearance at AS. Per usual, opening up the night of music are resident deejays, Soren and Drew Pompa. Always free, always key!

Aphotic Segment w/ Patrick Russell

Our spirits are high, our energies are plentiful and our record crates are full of fresh new jammies that we’re so eagerly excited to provide for your listening pleasure. 2015 feels like a year that is destined for the music, whether it’s countless amazing re-issues, old giants awaking from decades of sleep, or personal friends who are poised to hit their musical strides. It thrills us beyond words to also provide our efforts and we’ll continue with open minds and diligence.

Among our favorite persons in music this year is Detroit ex-pat, Patrick Russell, and not just because he’s a friend, but because he’s a lifelong student of the music. Patrick has dedicated his passions to collecting records and mastering the art of deejaying. His influences are vast but are seemingly anchored with a Detroit sound that encompasses an array of emotions. He has a way of translating music to project a kind of dark ambient, dystopian futurism with a generous sprinkling of funk. His dj sets always peak our interests and most importantly, whenever he plays, we always feel as if we’ve left learning something new. As such, we are overjoyed with the opportunity to present Patrick to our listeners.
Per usual, opening the night for this month’s Aphotic Segment will be resident deejays, Soren and Drew Pompa, and also per usual, this night is free of charge.
