Aphotic Segment - USA Edition

With a plethora of subject matter for which to theme our event, it comes with tremendous surprise that Aphotic Segment has yet to sound off about this year’s highly contested presidential debate. Whether you’ve become highly engrossed with or downright exhausted by the 2012 campaign, now is the time to stop by the Woodbridge pub and voice your opinion... and there is no better time to blather about said campaign than Aphotic’s springtime soiree that shall be referred to as the “USA Edition,” short for United Skulls of America.

As we move closer to an autocracy under this radical right-wing agenda, we’ll witness the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. As we become more civilized as better neighbors, friends and participants in the community, the government will further strip our rights to vote and assemble peacefully. No jobs? There are always entry level jobs available at McDonalds. No education? Who cares, there’s always the streets. No healthcare?... well, everyone dies anyway. Welcome to the United Skulls of America.

Please, why don’t you join us for an evening of music and conversation, as we speak of revolution and consume flagons of ale? Musical accompaniment is courtesy of Lord Jaye. So, expect to a borage of heavy musical rhetoric.

Nothing Elegant But Something Elephant, An Aphotic Segment

Aphotic Segment is flying high from its past month’s installment (I think my liver pangs have finally subsided), thanks to the phenomenal selections of Jeff Risk and Chad Pratt: two of Detroit’s principal tastemakers, if I may say so. And yes, all gear is safe, sound and fully functional again thanks to a cast of wonderful and slightly less intoxicated friends. But as the bar has seemingly risen like a phoenix from last month’s deranged adventures, we intend to get rowdy once again, featuring the lovely ladies of Nothing Elegant.

It’s been a year since Aphotic Segment first featured one stellar lady by the name of Miss Amy Kaherl, and in a year’s time Kaherl, a.k.a. Amy Dreamcatcher, has amassed quite a collection of successful late night appearances, perhaps becoming the darling of the Detroit dance party, if you will. Her wide-reaching influences, along with her knack for pop sensibility, give her collection a sense of candor and accessibility that projects an extreme likability, really.

But one is not simply enough. Fast forward to Sarah Aldridge, a lady of esteemed knowledge - knowledge of books, of cities, of music and of a general everything. Her upbringing was flush with the sounds of jazz and soul. Carrying that enlightenment from her youth and applying it to her cumulative music knowledge of today makes her make you begin stompin’ it like you’re at the roller rink or by the kitchen sink. No, we’re not talking about throwing up but actually, the complete opposite. Your legs might disappear.

Won’t you please join us for a Nothing Elegant Aphotic event that we congenially refer to as “Nothing Elegant, But Something Elephant,” ‘cause this shit’s gonna be big, haus… it’s gonna be big.

Aphotic Segment's Leap Year w/ Jeff Risk and Chad Pratt

Aphotic Segment celebrates this year’s February installment in observation of the lunisolar calendar’s bissextile. For the greater good of ‘mericans, that’s fancy speak for “leap year.” Indeed, 2012 has already shown signs toward predictions of conspiracy, change and even the downfall of civilization. Why not add another 24 hours? Don’t you worry your little buttons…we’ll make this one count.

Trail-blazing the musical selections for this month are two distinguished tastemakers. Introducing Chad Allen Pratt: very modern but also informed. Chad runs the gamut from experimental, post-punk and dream pop to their maturation, via bands like Stereolab and John Maus. Chad can be heard providing the always-pleasant soundtrack of tunes every Sunday at the Sugar House and also drumming you face off with local Ghostly outfit, Midwest Product.

Now Jeff Risk, who is the right kind of condition to help elevate the levels and askew the vernal equinox, was a 2008 Red Bull Music Academy selectee. Once you have a brief conversation with this Gregorian-esque, you’ll understand. Inspired by Primal Scream and 4AD, as well as hip-hop and jungle, Jeff is everything under the sun and everything good. This one might shake the recorder a little.

We’ll be doing this on February 29th at the Woodbridge Pub, so why not join us for that one extra day, and really make it memorable? I might just add this one to my eternal calendar. Always Free.

Aphotic Segment's Torch and Tabanus w/ Dan Wagner

Salutations viral fan-fare. Aphotic Segment is officially back after taking a brief hiatus. Now it’s time to say goodbye to the psychosomatic traumas of the American holiday season and consumer savagery. Forget the past and instead, consume the senses with a far-reaching playlist of fringe hits from Drew Pompa, and this month’s special guest, Dan Wagner.

Finally free from his foggy trenches of temporary solitude, this mystic Wagner is back and he’s brought with him a brand new bag…. but not the kind of divine enchanting fortune. Rather, sinister voodoo trickery meant to distill the most primal of actions and to cast away your deepest inhibitions. The event “Torch and Tabanus” (translated – fire and horse fly) will reflect an angle in Wagner’s music buzzing and blazing with sedition, subversively and luridly. The kind of sonic mind-fuck that you know is really evil, but undeniably hard to resist.

Join us for a night of apprehension yet innately magnetic debauchery as Dan ignites your sensibilities that may very well carry into bender territory…. just maybe. Always free.

Aphotic Segment - Thanksgiving Eve 2011

Aphotic Segment welcomes its second annual Thanksgiving eve celebration at the Woodbridge Pub. The first annual event was a rousing success, but in the spirit of Aphotic’s tradition of spontaneity, we’re changing gears this holiday. No talks of revolution or egregious pagan rhetoric. No protestations…. Simply, no strings attached.

Instead, we’d love you to join us, just as you normally would on the night before Thanksgiving. Casual to heavy drinking, reflections on the nightmares of holiday travel, your wretched in-laws, and the insidious pressures of modern life. Soothe your holiday spirit with the abundant flow of spirits and the general merriment of friends, before you retire to a day of family feasting.

A delicious palette of music will be plated and properly served by Will Sessions’ member, Tim Shellabarger and your favorite Slow’s BBQ server, Kevin Henry. Starters and night caps provided by Drew Pompa plus a new special guest added. Always FREE!

Aphotic Segment - Back From the Wilderness w/ Soren

Soren….. oh sweet Soren: a thrill-seeking, madcap of notorious claim. Of course! He must be…. He’s a Detroiter. If you aren’t, then you’re probably not from this town. Nonetheless, this swashbuckling, fortune-hunting harlequin, more than anything, is a toilsome adventurer. He’s grown up in the woods of Michigan, moved to the mean streets of the inner city, and now finds himself nestling in the mountains of Montana, amongst the nature critters and toothless hill men.

But now Soren’s leave of absence has been met with expiration, yet matched with new experience and new revelation. After all, chilling out at base camp and drinkin’ hot chocolate leaves ample time for the re-discovery of the soul…. And whether this sabbatical has been met with great change, we’re just happy to have Soren back in our company where we like him the most: wandering the streets of the Cass Corridor at 10 a.m. sharp after a weekend cocktail of “what the fuck just happened!?” Please, why don’t you join us for a special autumnal Aphotic Segment, as we welcome Soren back to the urban jungle? It shall be a momentous occasion!

Aphotic Segment - The Temptation Edition w/ Josh Dahlberg

What is your idea of a temptation? …A blandishment or a provocation? Perhaps it is a captivating magnetism or a seductive decoy culminating into deception and plagued by a never-ending maze of difficulties? You can certainly predict either as the end result of cavorting with Dahlberg and Pompa. Surely you’ve witnessed one of their mindboggling evenings of delusional chicanery…. And if you haven’t, well let’s just say that it can be extremely tempting when presented with the opportunity to chum around with these lads.

On September 28th, Aphotic Segment brings together these two rascals for the first time in more than a year…. Yes, a sight that is truly beholden. You will probably drink a little whiskey. Nay, you will eventually sweat pure grain alcohol by the end of the night, then wake up in the morning broke and with your pants missing. Thankfully, the latter has yet to occur. But since we can’t predict the future, we must wait and see what the night shall foretell from beginning to mysterious end. This will prove to be a night of real “Temptation.”
